The primary aims of the Society are to co-ordinate and promote all aspects of photobiology in Europe in a way which will optimise the achievements of European photobiology across a range of scientific, technological and medical arenas. Such developments include liaison with and encouragement of photobiologists in other parts of the world. These aims are achieved through publication of a peer-reviewed journal, Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences (PPS), the organisation of a biennial Congress, the holding of regional meetings within Europe, and providing support for meetings outside Europe. Educational opportunities for younger scientists form an important part of the society´s activities and include workshops, exchange study visits between research institutions and scholarships opportunities for attending conferences. ESP is also working towards the establishment of European Union PhD programmes.
In order to make ESP accessible to all interested photobiologists, there has been increased focus on the dissemination of information through the setting up of a dedicated website (which will also function as the website for the biennial congresses and other activities), and publication of books and other materials. ESP also wishes to continue to promote joint activities between relevant societies in the form of co-hosting of symposia speakers at congresses in order to promote cross-society contact and collaboration.

The German Society of Photobiology is concerned with the study of the effects of optical radiation (ultraviolet, visible and infrared) on living matter and organisms, as well as with the promotion of their application in medicine.
The achievement of these goals serves the close cooperation of its members in research and teaching, at scientific conferences and in special commissions.

The primary aims of NOFFOF are to coordinate and promote the science of photobiology and photomedicine in Norway.
Central activities include the NOFFOF annual meeting, granting travel awards to students, selecting the winner of the Claude Rimington’s Commemorative Prize and coordinating contact with international photobiology societies.

The Photobiology Association of Japan (PAJ) was established in 1982 as a joint organization of 14 academic societies, which shared interest in photobiology. Though some members were changed after then, PAJ plays steadily active role in promoting photobiology in Japan. Now it is composed of the following academic societies:
- The Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists
- The Biophysical Society of Japan
- The Japanese Biochemical Society
- The Japan Radiation Research Society
- The Japanese Society for Photomedicine and Phtotobiology
- The Chemical Society of Japan
- The Zoological Society of Japan
- The Japanese Society for Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry
- The Japanese Photochemistry Association
- The Botanical Society of Japan
- The Japanese Association for Photosynthesis Research
- The Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry
Council member is composed of representatives from these societies. The Council is the decision-makingbody of PAJ and will be fully responsible for the PAJ in the matter of science and business and also responsible for the AIP in the matter of science and business as the representative of Japan, including the proposal for candidates of Finsen Medalist's and awardees and named lecturers. The Council shall be convened, at the call of the president, twice a year. Two meetings shall be held at the Photobiology Meeting of Japan.
The presidents of PAJ:
- in 1997-1998, Dr. Masamitsu Wada, Tokyo Metropolitan University
- in 1999-2000, Dr. Motoyuki Tsuda, Himeji Institute of Technology
- in 2001-2002, Dr. Masako Sasaki, Tokai University
- in 2003-2004, Dr. Tadashi Ohishi, Nara Women's University
PAJ has been holding Photobiology Symposium every year, sponsored many scientific meetings on photobiology, and has played a key role in getting the research fund for the splendid works on photobiology. PAJ also sponsored the 11th International Congress on Photobiology at 1992 in Kyoto, Japan, and has published encyclopedia on photobiology.

The French Society for Photobiology (SFPb) is a dynamic and interdisciplinary organization that reflects the diverse nature of photobiology. It actively fosters joint initiatives with other French societies and research groups and organizes scientific meetings that serve as warm and enriching opportunities for exchange and collaboration. The SFPb is also open to organizing joint congresses with sister societies, such as with the Italian society. These joint congresses are always wonderful moments for scientific exchange as well as friendly interactions between researchers, students, and postdoctoral fellows. They are consistently a great success.
The SFPb’s members are deeply involved in international organizations like the ESP and IUPB, ensuring strong global representation and contributing to major events such as the ESP Congress in Lyon, France (2023) and the 18th International Congress on Photobiology in Perth, Australia (2024). The society is proud to honor the achievements of its members, such as Angela Falciatore, whose work was recognized with the Edna Roe Lecturer, an IUPB Award at the 18th ICP Congress in Perth.
With its commitment to supporting young researchers, the SFPb offers Thesis and Young Researcher Awards, as well as grants and scholarships to enable participation in international conferences and build essential global networks.

The Italian Society of Photobiology (SIFB) is a non-profit association dedicated to the advancement of photobiology in all its forms. It aims to bring together scientists from the field of photobiology, facilitate their interactions, and promote collaborations with researchers in related disciplines. To achieve these goals, SIFB is committed to advancing scientific research in photobiology and disseminates scientific knowledge through conferences, seminars, and annual meetings. It encourages information exchange and collaborations between scientists and professionals in the field. Additionally, the Society supports the professional development of its younger members, fostering their growth within the scientific community.
2024 SIFB Annual Congress
The secretariat of the Italian Society of Photobiology is happy to announce that the 2024 conference will take place in Messina, 9 (start: 9 a.m.) – 11 (end: 1 p.m.) September Continuing our tradition of encouraging interdisciplinary exchange, the 2024 conference intends to broaden the audience to encompass scientists from across the Mediterranean who are actively involved in these areas.
